Beauty Tip of the Week: Fitness Myths!

Happy Friday!! I hope everyone had a great week. When I was thinking about my beauty tip of the week post I realized I haven't done many health & fitness posts.  So I'm using this week to clear up any myths that I heard when I started exercising  last year. At first, I read tons of  information on the web and it was so overwhelming and confusing. I didn't know what was right or what was wrong.  After months of doing some serious research, I found that there were so many myths out there that weren't true at all.

FYI: I am not a fitness or health expert in anyway at all. Just a girl sharing my experiences.

Myth #1: Woman that weight train will build big muscles:
I used to think this was true. Years ago, my friend and I would go to the gym and the only machines we used were cardio machines. We would never go near a set of weights. We thought that was for people that wanted to bulk up and gain muscle. We were so wrong!! Lifting weights aka strength training is just as important, if not more than cardio. Why? First off, when men lift weights its very different because men have much higher testosterone levels than woman do. So when woman lift weights it doesn't make you big, it just tones your muscles. Plus the more muscle you have the higher your metabolism is which makes you lose weight faster.

Myth #2: If you don't work out five or six days a week you won't see results:
Another myth I used to think was true. If you work out 3 or 4 days a week at high intensity you will experience the same results. Plus, your body needs time to heal, or you can injure yourself and not be able to work out and really not see results.

Myth #3: You can workout a certain problem area (i.g thighs) and just lose the weight there.
Spot reducing is not possible. Even though it would be great, you can't lose weight in just one part of your body. If you're eating right and exercising you will lose weight in all areas of your body. Another thing, the first place you gain any fat, is the last place you lose it.

Myth #4: Eating less and using diet pills:
This is the one myth that I can personally relate to the most. In high school I had an eating disorder and I thought starving myself and taking diet pills was the answer. Yes, of course it worked at first and I lost weight but after a while it stopped working and I just ended up gaining more weight back. The diet pills I took were damaging my health and I didn't even know it (or care at the time). Now I realize the best way to keep weight off is by eating healthy food and enough of it. Starving yourself will eventually cause your metabolism to slow down and make it harder for you to lose weight.

Myth #5: Doing countless crunches will eliminate belly fat:
You can do a thousand crunches and the fat will still be there if you don't incorporate cardio. You need to get rid of the fat around the muscle for you to see a six, four or even two pack. I finally learned that after doing tons of crunches (which I hate by the way). As long as your doing cardio, strength training and an ab exercises you will start to see a difference everywhere, including your stomach.

I used to believe all of these myths and found out the hard way. So I hope this helps anyone who is starting a workout plan, wants to or just wants to be healthy!

If you know of any other diet or fitness myths please share them!!:)

Turbo Fire- A Review of my Favorite Workout Program!

Fitness has become a big part of my life since last year, and I've been wanting to share my love for it for a while now.  I figured my first fitness post would be about one of my favorite workout programs Turbo Fire! I'm going to tell you about the program, why it's effective, the workouts that are included and why I love it. I purchased this program from Beachbody.com over six months ago.

Beachbody is the company that sells this program along with other popular workout programs such as P90X, Insanity, Brazilian Butt Lift, Turbo Jam ( which is the  beginner version of Turbo Fire) and many more. This is what Beachbody has to say about Turbo Fire..

"Turbo Fire is an intense new cardio conditioning workout designed and practiced by the famous fitness trainer Chalene Johnson. Chalene will help shape your body with intense fat-burning exercises that have been proven to be 9x more affective then average cardio workout".

What is Turbo Fire?
Turbo Fire was released in 2010,  it's a series of videos that incorporate different activities, a little yoga and stretching, resistance/strength training, ab focused workouts, and of course a lot of cardio in the form of kickboxing and dance.

The basic 90 day program comes with the following twelve videos:
  • Four Fire videos: Fire 30, Fire 45, Fire 45EZ, Fire 55EZ
  • Three HIIT videos: HIIT 15, HIIT 20, HIIT 25
  • Two Strength Training videos: Tone 30, Sculpt 30
  • Two stretch videos: Stretch 10, Stretch 40
  • One Abs video: Core 20
You also get a full nutrion guide, the turbo class schedule, guide books to track your progress and a resistance band.

I will go into more detail about what Fire, EZ and HIIT stand for below..

Why it's effictive?
It's all about the HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is proved to burn up to 9x more fat and calories than traditional cardio. HIIT means working out at your very max in up to 1 minute intervals.

How that works?
When you exercise at your max (1 minute intervals) it improves aerobic and anaerobic energy release and cranks up your bodies metabolism to burn calories faster. This occurs because the intense intervals fatigue your muscle groups. In turn, your body works overtime to replenish the tired muscles with oxygen, creating the "Afterburn Effect" which can last up to 24 hours after you've finished the workout. By combining HIIT, general interval training and the cardio burn of kickboxing, these Turbo Fire videos are a fun, sweaty way to melt off pounds during and after the workout.

The Fire Workouts:
As stated above, Turbo Fire includes 4 fire videos in total: Fire 30, Fire 45, Fire 45EZ and Fire 55EZ. The number stands for how long the workout is (i.g Fire 30 is a 30 min workout, Fire 45 is a 45 min workout and so on). All of those workouts include about 3-4 minutes of a warm up and cool down with different combos of kickboxing routines in the middle. Many of the kickboxing routines incorporate dance movements as well and the choreography is pretty straight forward. Once you do a workout a few times you will have the moves down. Than, you can focus on your form and technique. These fire workouts also include turbo's which are the HIIT (1 minute intervals). You basically do a super fast routine that includes some plyometric moves for 1 minute than you rest (recover) for 1 minute. They really get your heart rate up and you're completely out of breath but you feel so good about yourself.

The videos that have the EZ title are supposed to stand for easy but there not, they just don't include any turbo's. There is also a modifier for people that don't like to jump and would rather have a low impact but high intensity workout.

Here is a preview of one of the Fire videos..

The HIIT Workouts:
There are 3 HIIT workouts, one is 15 minutes, one is 20 minutes and the other one is 25 minutes. These are pretty intense. You do 1 minute drills that are super fast with high impact moves and then you take a break for 1 minute and start over. For example HIIT 15 has 3 different 1 minute drills but you do them for a total of 6 times. I know it seems like a lot but before you know it the 15, 20 or 25 minutes are up and your dripping sweat and tired, but feel good because you just burned so many calories!

Here's another preview of a HIIT workout and Stretch workout:

The Strengh Training Workouts:
Both Sculpt 30 and Tone 30 use resistance bands that target every muscle in your body and are used to strengthen and tone your muscles.  I'm not a big fan of using resistance bands, I prefer free weights so I've only tried these workouts a few times. I use other strength training workouts in place of these. If you like resistance bands than you will like these workouts.

The Stretch and Core Workouts:
There are two stretch videos, one is 10 minutes long and the other is 40 minutes long. The stretch 10 are basic stretches that are good to do after any cardio workout. The stretch 40 is part yoga and part deep stretches. The Core 20 video is an intense ab workout, it uses your body and resistance bands to target your abs and includes some standing ab work. When I first tried this video I couldn't finish it because my core and lower back muscles were weak. Each time I did the video I got a little better and can now complete it.

Why I love it?
Well I've always liked cardio kickboxing and have loved dance since I was a little girl. So when you combine the two its my kind of workout. Then there's the music!!! You can tell that they took a lot of time with this. It's a bit of hip hop/dance that motivates you to move! The song selections are great and most of the time the music matches the choreography and corresponds to specific moves. It's a great idea because the songs eventually help condition your brain and body to the moves. I also really like the instructor, Chalene, she is super motivating without being obnoxious or corny.

With all that being said, I hope you guys enjoyed this review. Basically, if you're looking for a cardio challenge that has kickboxing and plyometrics you will probably love Turbo FIre. If you are looking for something that is an intro to kickboxing but still effective I would recommend Turbo Jam (the beginner version of Turbo Fire). I like both, I graduated from Turbo Jam to Turbo Fire and can honestly say I got addicted to both pretty quick.

**I was not paid or asked to do this review, I purchased the program with my own money 2 years ago and have enjoyed it so much that I wanted to share it with all of you!!**

Have you ever tried Turbo Fire?? Or if you have any questions about the program, please ask and I will try to answer as best as I can. This is my first real fitness post and I'm excited to share more!!

There not only yummy and healthy, they also aid in weight loss which is a big plus!  These are 10 of my favorite smoothies that I love to mix up!.

1. PEANUT BUTTER & BANANA SMOOTHIE:

  • 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter or nut butter

  • 10 ice cubes
  • Put half of the watermelon in the blender and blend until smooth, then add the rest of the ingredients and repeat until smooth.

3. STRAWBERRY AVOCADO SMOOTHIE
This one tastes like more of a dessert and is filling so I sometimes have this for breakfast and it keeps me full until lunch. It's okay though because there's so many vitamins and nutrients!

Recipe:
  • 1/4 cup of an avocado
  • 1 1/2 cup of strawberries
  • 1/4 cup of skim milk, almond or soy milk
  • 3/4 cup of plain yogurt
  • 6 ice cubes
  • First blend the milk, yogurt and avocado until smooth. Then add the rest of ingredients and blend until smooth.

Recipe:
  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup of plain yogurt

6. PINEAPPLE SMOOTHIE
Another one that is really easy to make and with only 3 ingredients, plus its super refreshing!

Recipe:
  • 1 cup of skim milk, almond or soy milk
  • 4 ounces of canned pineapple

This one might sound a little odd to you as it did to me at first but I ended up liking it. Plus it gives you a big energy boost!

Recipe:
  • 10 large romaine lettuce leaves
  • 2 cups of chopped cantaloupe slices
  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 6 ice cubes
  • Put everything into a blender and blend until smooth. Oh and you don't even taste the lettuce.

9. BLACKBERRY AND BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE

BODY SHAPING FOODS

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Zumba, it's become one of the most popular fitness classes in the world. I've been wanting to try it for a while now since I've so many great things about it. For those of you who have never heard of it, "Zumba is a high-energy program with motivating music and dance drawn from salsa, meringue, and other Latin steps and free-form styles".

I bought the book, Zumba Ditch the Workout, Join the Party! The Zumba Weight Loss Program and it's such an informative and motivating book! A few of my friends and myself went to a few classes already and have started one of the diets in the book. I thought I was gonna be horrible at it and embarrass myself but that was so not the case. It was so much fun plus I was dripping sweat by the end of the class. It's safe to say I'm pretty much obsessed with Zumba now :)

Taking Care of Hand and Nails: My Way

As you probably know the key to achieving attractive looking hands and nails is more than just the color of nail polish you choose or how well you apply it. Just like having a skin or hair care regimen, it's also important to have a good regimen for your hands and nails too. Let's be honest, we all probably feel better about ourselves when are nails look nice and groomed, right? In order to accomplish this you have to take care of your nails to keep them healthy. Thankfully you don't have to go to a nail salon to achieve this. I am in no way a professional or do I claim to be, but over the years I've developed a routine that has helped to keep my nails strong and healthy. I'm not saying the products I use or the things I do will work best for everyone, but they do for me! If anything, I'm hoping this can help to serve as a guide for your own routine. Here's what I do:

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

This post isn’t going to be one of my usual ones. It doesn’t have to do with beauty products but it does have to do with beauty and body image and the way we look at ourselves everyday. I’m going to share my personal story, not a story I’m exactly proud of but I want to share it because I’m sure I am not the only one who has had these feelings at some point in there lives.

I named this post Mirror Mirror on the wall because of the issues I’ve had with my body image and for all the girls that have and are going through this. Thank god I’ve over come this but it took years for me to even realize that I had an issue.

Throughout my life, I’ve asked myself this question many many times (too many times). It seemed like every mirror gave me a different answer, I would be at a clothing store looking into the mirror after I tried on an outfit and thinking I looked skinny enough to wear this. Then I would come home and put on the same outfit and see something totally different than I did at the store. Sounds nuts, right? I now know, about 10 years later that it was all in my mind and that it wasn’t different mirrors that were making me see something different. It was something called Body Image Disorder, that is actually pretty common.

I’m going to back up all the way from high school (where I really started to have this problem). A lot of girls that age are usually self conscious about how they look, but there's a difference in just being self conscious and being way too critical and not seeing what everyone else see’s. I was in the beginning of my junior year of high school when I first realized I wanted to loose weight. At this point, all I knew is I wanted to go on a “diet” but I didn’t know how extreme I was going to end up taking it. I wasn’t really over weight or fat but I saw other girls that were really skinny and wanted to look like that and I was determined to do it.  Before this, I had a normal attitude when it came to my body image. That all changed when I started this diet.

There were these diet pills called Xenedrin (which were taken off the market about 5 years ago due to a few cases where people had heart attacks from this pill). I think they still sell it without the ephedrine in it. Ephedrine was the ingredient that made it so dangerous and caused your heart to race which caused your metabolism to increase.

I cant exactly remember how, but me and 2 of my other good friends all started taking them. The directions were to take 2 a day and that’s what I started doing but then I would take 4 a day and before I knew it the weight was just melting off me so quickly and I didn’t even exercise.  I obviously loved it and so did my friends, but I was the only one out of my friends who took it too far.  By the end of junior year I lost a good amount of weight. At the time this diet pill was a miracle pill to me, I would make sure I bought a bottle a week before I was about to run out just in case I wasn’t able to get to that store to buy them. It was pretty much like a drug, I couldn’t bare to go one day without these pills. Of course it was mostly all in my mind and I see that now and that’s where my battle with my eating disorder and body image issues really began.

Senior year up until the age of 23 was when I was totally obsessed with dieting, these pills, mirrors, and the scale. My weight would fluctuate throughout these years, but never to a point where I thought I looked fat (so imagine that) and  even though I didn’t believe it nor could see it, people around me were worried. The sickest part about it was when people would tell me I looked way too skinny or that I didn’t look right bc of all the weight I lost ,I took it as a compliment. As long as the comments had to do with the words, skinny, weight loss, bony, etc. it meant (in my sick head) that I looked good.

The two major problems that would make me insane about this was mirrors and my scale. I will never forget when my mom threw out our scale that was in the bathroom bc she noticed I was weighing myself several times a day. She didn’t know that sometimes I was actually weighing myself after I would drink a glass of water! She also didn’t know about the Xenedrin.  I of course went out and bought a scale that I kept hidden in my room, at that time I couldn’t bare to not weigh myself at least a few times a day.

I noticed that my dieting was not normal and my obsession with my body and these topics were way more extreme then my friends were. I would be out with my friends at a diner or wherever and would pick at the small salad I ordered. My friends weren’t stupid though, so I was constantly coming up with lame excuses why I wasn’t hungry…again. They didn’t buy it though. A normal weekly meal plan for me was: for example: on Mondays I would let myself have a small salad (that I made myself) which included maybe 10 pieces of lettuce, 2 cucumbers and tomatoes, a few pieces of onions and if I felt like I should treat myself I would put about 2 or 3 croutons in the salad. I don’t remember using salad dressing and if I did I'm sure it was a fat free, sugar free dressing. I would eat that and I still recall being full (crazy, I know), then I would weigh myself like I did after everything I ate. Then the next day (Tuesday) that was the day I hardly ate anything except 2 glasses of juice (one early in the day and one later or at night). Then the cycle would continue to Wednesday with the salad and so on. The only reason my body let me live off hardly any food was bc of the pills and the fact that my stomach had shrunk so much that I was hardly ever hungry. In the back of my head I knew this wasn’t healthy but it made me happy and the results I was seeing made me even more happy.

I met my first real boyfriend at the end of senior year and even though I remained skinny, I let myself eat more normally and wasn’t so obsessed with what I wasn’t or was eating. I know it was bc I had a boyfriend and didn’t feel like I had to impress anyone at the time. But once we broke up a year later, the first thing I knew I had to do was go on a serious diet bc in my mind it helped me feel better about myself. So I started taking the pills regularly again and stopped eating everyday and the little weight I did gain that past year I made sure I lost it and even some more.  I started going to the gym almost everyday and would work out until I almost passed out and there I was back to seriously dieting and hurting my body again.

It’s like my obsession with not eating and taking those pills was like a yo yo effect and I didn’t realize the damage I could have seriously been doing to my body. Losing weight then gaining weight over and over is horrible for you. The clothes in my closet constantly changed as I moved from size to size. I wasn’t really aware at the time that was dangerous.

Slowly I learned to treat myself with the same love and respect that others showed me. In the beginning, I cared for myself by simply not gazing into mirrors as much as possible. Yes, in our image-based society, I was actually successful in avoiding mirrors and even my reflections in store windows most of the time. I began focusing on the parts of myself I had always wanted to develop on the inside, rather than on what had started to die on the outside. When I felt more confident with my inner strengths, I gradually began allowing myself more glances into the looking glass. This time I did my best not to ask questions such as who is the thinnest or the prettiest. I did my best not to compare myself to others, to previous versions of myself, or even to possible pictures of what I could look like in the future

So here I am today, 2011 and I thank god that things weren’t worse. I never went to a therapist for my “eating disorder” , I wish I did but at that time I didn’t want to listen to anyone who didn’t agree with the way I felt. I would be lying if I said I was totally over BIS (body image disorder), bc I’m not. There are still a lot of times when I look in the mirror and say to myself, ughh (you look fat or gross). But the difference from then to now is that I eat pretty normal, don’t obsess about what I’m eating, and most importantly I feel comfortable with the way I look. That was not something I was able to say for a long time.

I wanted to post this story because I know there a lot of girls going through the same thing I did, and its not a fun thing to go through. It’s also something you should never be embarrassed or ashamed of. With today’s “body image type” portrayed in advertising as the ideal way to look, there’s no wonder that the number of girls and woman effected by this disorder increase everyday.

Here are some Media and Body Image Statistics:
  • 8 million people in the U.S suffer from an eating disorder

  • 90% are woman and girls

  • 8 out of 10 woman are not happy with their reflection

  • 80% of children are afraid of being fat

  • more than 50% of 10 year old girls wish they were thinner

  • Americans spend more than 40 billion a year on diet and beauty products

  • The average American woman is 5’4 and 140lbs.

  • The average American model is 5’11 and 117lbs.

  • In your lifetime 50,000  people will die as a direct result of their Eating Disorder

  • The current media ideal of thinness is achieved by less than 5% of the female population.
